I saw
Alice on Friday night in 3D. I liked it. For the most part, the 3D was not obnoxious and added to the depth of the film. Only a few times did they pull the "throwing something at you" or "flying something by you" gag that I feel makes 3D more of a gimmick than an effective story-telling tool.
I'd better spoiler-proof my next few thoughts...
Johnny Depp was as I expected him in the role the Mad Hatter. I suppose after seeing him as Jack Sparrow in the
Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, a garishly-dressed and off-kilter Depp is not a shocker.
The Blue Caterpillar was excellently voiced by Alan Rickman, as were the Cheshire Cat (Stephen Fry), the Dormouse (Barbara Windsor) and the White Rabbit (Michael Sheen). I enjoyed the malevolence of the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter), but I wasn't sure of what direction the writers were taking the White Queen (Anne Hathaway). Pacifist, or a mistress of manipulation, you decide.
All in all,
Alice in Wonderland is a visual treat that has a few rough spots.
