I just burned through this book in about 3 days. (Most of it in 1). This was a really fun read.
Though skewed to the young adult market it was written with plenty of fantastic humor and can be thoroughly enjoyed by any age.

The story follows a teenage Jacob whose Grandfather Abe has long told him of home for "peculiar" children that can do many wondrous things, float, lift boulders with their bare hands, you know, X-Men sort of things. He even had photos, old yellowed photos of these people doing their miraculous things. He also told him of the monsters. Monsters that he has fought against to save these children. These stories and photos held Jacob's attention and fueled his imagination for years until, as with most kids, out grew these flights of fancy and now regards them all as ramblings of an old man and retouched imagery.

When Jacob discovers his Grandfather dying, attacked by what the authorities declare "wild dogs", Abe tells him what sounds like random sentences, a date, names,... Are these clues to Abe's mysterious past or just more ramblings of a dying man? And does Jacob see something in the woods? Something not quite human?

Events occurring in a rapid fire pace throw Jacob into a world he thought only existed in fairy tales and his life, in fact the entire worlds, may be at stake unless he can find truth about his Grandfather, himself and this mysterious home.

As I said, I had a ball reading this book. Highlighting the stories are the very pictures described in the pages. These pictures, all authentic photographs, (though some "with minor altering") gives the reader sense that this bizarre world does indeed exist, (or it did exist,..will exist?)

Humor, action, romance, time travel, monsters, all wrapped up into a fantastic book.

There are rumors of the book being optioned for a film. Fox reportedly is looking to Tim Burton to helm it but these are all rumors at this point.

While I can't for obvious reasons give you a look into the film, I can give you an idea of what you might expect. Thanks to the new fad of creating visual "trailers" for books I can present you with...
