Steven Spielberg who says that if you didn’t like the alien aspect of the film, blame screenwriter George Lucas.

I’m very happy with the movie. I always have been,” Spielberg tells Empire Magazine. “I sympathize with people who didn’t like the MacGuffin because I never liked the MacGuffin. George and I had big arguments about the MacGuffin. I didn’t want these things to be either aliens or inter-dimensional beings. But I am loyal to my best friend. When he writes a story he believes in—even if I don’t believe in it—I’m going to shoot the movie the way George envisaged it. I’ll add my own touches, I’ll bring my own cast in, I’ll shoot the way I want to shoot it, but I will always defer to George as the storyteller of the Indy series. I will never fight him on that.”

But Spielberg won’t completely throw Lucas under the bus. The director owns up to being the one behind one of the most infamous moments from the film.

“What people really jumped at was Indy climbing into a refrigerator and getting blown into the sky by an atom-bomb blast. Blame me. Don’t blame George,” he says. “That was my silly idea. People stopped saying ‘jump the shark.’ They now say, ‘nuked the fridge.’ I’m proud of that. I’m glad I was able to bring that into popular culture.”

And the chipmunk?

And the rip-off human-eating termites or whatever they were?

And the fact that Spielberg has signed up for Indy 5?

I think the most relevant question is "when will you stop making Indy films - perhaps when they have a rating of say 1.5 on IMDB?".

Considering Indy 4 has the lowest rating thus far of the series, they are well on their way.

There is standing by your friend and there is enabling. Spielberg seems to be doing the later more than the former when it comes to Lucas.

Yep. Friends don't let friends make awful prequel trilogies too.

<checks the screenplay credits for the prequel trilogy for Spielberg's name, just in case>

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was jokingly referred to as Indiana Jones: The Apology referring to previous awful installment of The Temple of Doom. Perhaps the fifth movie would be titled Indiana Jones: Sorry Again.

Perhaps they're banking on people considering the rule of thumb "avoid even-numbered Indy films"? :)

Has there ever been a good 4th film that followed a popular trilogy?

Could one count the Star Trek films as a trilogy until the fourth came along?

Good point.. The 4th film was the most successful of the lot. Just proves there are always exceptions.

I disagree, Wrath of Khan is universally seen as the best Trek film ever made, while The Voyage Home is generally seen as....well....cute and inoffensive.

I agree, 2 was easily the best. However, you asked "Has there ever been a good 4th film that followed a popular trilogy" :) Star Trek 4 probably is the best 'fourth' film in a (in the order they were made) series, and it's enjoyable.

I never said the the 4th film was the best, just the most successful. TWOK may indeed by the best, though it runs a tight race with TUC in my opinion.

Yep. 2, 6, and 8 are the first Star Trek films I would get on DVD (I already have 2).

Out of curiosity, what do you think of First Contact or ST11?
