Columbia Pictures has renewed development in a Flatliners remake by tasking screenwriter Ben Ripley (Source Code) to flesh out a story. Based on the 1990 movie that starred Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon and Julia Roberts.

Honestly as far as films that a remake might actually work for,...I could see this happening and not being too bad.

And what will a remake bring to the table?

The original was pretty decent. Write something original instead please Hollywood.

It has been forever since I saw the original, but I remember it being OK. Seemed more about getting the stars of the film in the same movie. A rewatch may be necessary, but I think a remake will be OK if they concentrate on taking it to the darker topics and shy away from the obligatory gore fest that most Hollywood horror films are all about. I could see them turning it into more of a Hellraiser remake pretty easily.
If they can shy from that, it might be a nice update.

I remember it being so-so back then and I bet if I watch it again I'll be bored. Dying for a few seconds and bringing back bad dreams just wont cut it for me today. I think at the time the A-list cast was the draw so now I think they need a hell-raiser to bring people in.

Back in the day I really liked this movie.
Spoiler ahead (why are you reading this thread if you haven't seen this 20 year old flick!)

I thought the plot of a bunch of know-it-all med-students who thought they could research anything, including what lies beyond the grave, was compelling. The movie leads you on, making you think that they are actually discovering something profound (or terrifying). It wants you to think it's saying something about the spiritual but the message never becomes clear. Then you realize that the med-students haven't really discovered anything. In the end their arrogance has done them in and what they've found isn't answers, it's brain damage.

I think a re-make might actually be decent. But I do agree with mikeymike, a re-make is certainly not obligatory for this one.

(FWTW, I like the *first* season of True Blood for the same reason: feint to the supernatural, then wham with reality!)
