You may, or may have not, heard that Marvel is going to kill off one of the iconic Fantastic Four.
Very few outside of the creative team at Marvel know and the comic book publisher is working to keep it that way. That includes shipping the issue (which hits stores in January) with a “death bag.”
The promo will keep the comic’s cover a secret and won’t allow Internet sites to share the cover before it hits stores.
The promotion comes as part of the current story arc ‘Three’, which will apparently result in the death of one of the team’s four family members.
“The real reason it came up was that we were talking about how we wanted to hang onto the story secret of who our casualty actually is until as late in the game as possible,” Brevoort explained to CBR of the gimmick.
Brevoort cited the large amount of spoilers that exist on the internet due to illegally-scanned comic books as one of the main reasons for the promotion.
The ‘death bag’ is completely black aside from a small Fantastic Four logo with the number three emblazoned across it.
“This is going to be a great reading, great looking comic and the culmination of about two years of storytelling, as well as the kickoff to the next era of Fantastic Four or what comes next,” Brevoort concluded. “Putting a big spotlight on it is perfectly appropriate from my point of view.”
All well and good, but that 'death bag' will only keep the secret till, well, lets see..the comic stores will open on the east coast at 8am, so about 8:10am.
