Jonja.net was fortunate enough to get to speak with director/producers Richard Taylor and Zack Beins (two wildly energetic and very humourous men), founders of Bizjack Flemco Productions, and talk a little about their new short film "The Misled Romance of Cannibal Girl and Incest Boy"
."Tell me a little about yourselves."ZB ~
"My name is Zack Beins
and I'm co-director of 'Cannibal Girl and Incest Boy', and co-founder of Bizjack Flemco, the production company."RT ~
"I'm Richard Taylor
, and along with my partner here, we're Bizjack Flemco productions. We're in town --- we make movies right here in Denver. Our new movie is called 'The Misled Romance of Cannibal Girl and Incest Boy'. It's a Super 8 short film, a cavalcade of violence and gore --- what would you say it is Zack? Describe the movie."ZB ~
"It's a blood-tastic, bloodfest romantic comedy family film."RT ~
"A romantic horror comedy. Being put out by Troma Studios --- who do the 'Toxic Avenger', 'Class of Nukem High', 'Cannibal - The Musical' and, you know, a bunch of B-movie type things.""How did you get started in the business?"RT ~
"Well... we just started making movies and... sending them in to Troma, and Troma got a hold of them and they contacted us and they started putting out our stuff on DVD, which led us to go out and help make 'Poultrygeist' --- which is their new movie --- 'Poultrygeist - Night of the Chicken Dead'. And me and Zack both did gore FX on that movie.ZB ~
"Pretty much it started out with us being fans of Troma-type movies, and we just said... 'We can make that type of movie'... and Troma said 'Yeah, you sure could. We want your movies'."RT ~
"And so... you know... we make our own movie and come to horror conventions like this, and sell it on DVD, and it's the best way to go... get your name out there.""What made you decide to shoot on 8mm film stock?"RT ~
"Well, we love the look of Super 8 and the story that we wanted to tell between a cannibal and a boy of incest falling in love with each other... we thought it could only be told through the magic of super-duper Super 8. And it gives it a really scary looking, snuff ... 1970's kind of home movie look."
"So it stands out from the sea of independent horror DV's (direct to video) that are being made right now. So that's also real cool."ZB ~
"It's also a sequel to a previous film we shot in our Super 8 class that's called 'Unicorn'. It's a send-off of a little girl with a fun little unicorn lollipop.""You've already begun to answer my next question. What were some of your previous projects?"RT ~
"In addition to 'Unicorn' we shot 'Attack of the Killer Dryer from Mars', which is a real
early movie we made. We've been making movies since we were in high school. We met in high school, and we are just now starting to get... I mean, we got like over 50 movies, and we're just now starting to..."ZB ~
"...sell them!"RT ~
"I mean, we've got a library... there all on YouTube. You can go to MySpace.com/bizjackflemco
and check out all our stuff on there. We've got comedies and horrors..."ZB ~
"Hor-Rors! Not whores."RT ~
"Yeah. Oops, sorry!""You stated earlier that you are based here in Denver?"RT ~
"Yeah. Right here in Denver!"ZB ~
"We like to keep it local. It's a lot easier when all your resources are in town rather than moving out to Hollywood...shooting big Hollywood movies..."RT ~
"We'd like to get out to Hollywood one day, but we want to make our feature first. We haven't made a feature yet, and without going to Hollywood with a feature... we think that's just a waste of time. You should go out there with a feature and then...you'll be more successful that way. Instead of going out there and trying to work on other people's movies, you should go out with your own movie and work on other people's movies, and show your movie around, and maybe get popular that way.""What do you enjoy doing when you're not behind the camera?"RT ~
"I draw... a lot. I like to draw cartoons. I play accordion. I like to yodel. I like to eat sauerkraut."ZB ~
"I actually like to watch movies. I'm a couch potato. I do the YouTube thing. I like to watch stuff on the internet. Those are my hobbies.""Who were some of your early influences?"RT ~
"We both got into Troma, which is Lloyd Kaufman, and that brought us together. A lot of Monty Python, a lot of John Waters. Peter Jackson... early
Peter Jackson. MST3K."ZB ~
"Everbody has some type of influence. George Romero. Jack Hill."RT ~
"The list could go on.""What is in the future for Bizjack Flemco?"RT ~
In the future we have a film called 'Adam the Amazing Zombie Killer'. It's the first zombie movie with absolutely no zombies in it. It's about a guy who gets hit on the head, and hallucinates that his town turns into zombies. So he goes around killing people that he thinks are zombies, but are actually just real people. So look for that.
"And you can always pick up a copy of 'The Misled Romance of Cannibal Girl and Incest Boy' on DVD at MySpace.com/incestcannibal
"Cannibal Incest was taken. It's a band apparently."RT ~
"We just were reviewed on 'Bloody Disgusting.com'
. They call our movie a 'heart-warming tale of gut-munching, penis-eating, head-stomping fun!'. And they don't usually review short films on Bloody Disgusting.com... so we were really.... pissing our pants when they reviewed our film! We were really excited!"Well guys, best of luck and thank you for your time."RT/ZB ~
"Thank you. Thank you so much."
