Director Jose Padilha says that while he respects the original version of RoboCop, he won’t be bound to follow it exactly when he reboots the film.

“I love the sharpness and political tone of RoboCop , and I think that such a film is now urgently needed,” he says. ” But I will not repeat what [Paul] Verhoeven has done so clearly and strongly. Instead I try to make a film that will address topics that Verhoeven [left] untreated. If you are a man [who] changes into a robot, how do you do that? What is the difference between humans and robots developed? What is free will? What does it mean to lose your free will? Those are the issues that I think.”

I think Jose Padilha should watch a bit of 'Ghost in the Shell'.

I just mean his quote seems very reminiscent to everything explored in Ghost in the Shell. Maybe he is just going to do his own take on that but with a Robocop wrapper. Guess that really isn't a bad thing. I'd be lying if I said I didn't like those themes. They were the same themes that made me a big fan of the Terminator television series.

I'm just not sure that Robocop's setting allows for a greater exploration of that theme. An obvious factor is the vast difference between Robocop's cyborg nature and the 100% natural humans (pacemakers, prosthetics and silicon implants aside), but I can only see that going in limited directions, such as Robocop being rejected by the populace because he's different and the mob descends on him (like that episode of TNG where Data crashes on that pre-warp planet with no memory and a pocket full of radioactivity), or being rejected by the populace and the state/OCP/whatever saying "well, while we defend him, you can't touch him".

With a metal crotch and a diet of baby food, he's hardly going anywhere in terms of love life. He gets recharged at OCP. There's not a lot of room to manoeuvre to give him a life outside of his job. Ghost in the Shell has explored the theme of being so technically modified that the body comes with a warranty and a regular amount of servicing, and they can't leave Section 9 without having to give back everything but their brains, and then it's unlikely that they could officially leave because of the secrets they know.
