I have been waiting and waiting for this movie. With every trailer and sneak peek I grew more and more excited to return to the Ridley Scott sci-fi universe.

Image

In a hurried drive I sped to a local theater to catch an afternoon showing. Squeezing it in among a very busy weekend. The previews play (for 15 minutes I think!) the lights dim and the movie starts.

Image

Slowly the film starts to take shape. A brief scene to set the stage and a couple of info dumps later we get to our destination and almost immediately we find out why Scott continually said this was "sort of" a prequel to Alien. I'm not giving too much away to reveal to you all that what transpires in the film does NOT take place on LV-426. So it does NOT tell the story of the mysterious ship and it's "jockey".

It DOES tell a story about a similar planet and a similar ship and a similar creature and...well..it's similar. Which makes the thing incredibly annoying! If this isn't the same planet/ship/alien, then why the heck does Scott smack us in the face over and over with "hints" of that movie? We get to see primordial face-huggers, we get to see the pilot seat with pilot, we get to see the ship, a robot gets himself ripped apart and looks amazing similar to Ash after he got whacked. Flame throwers! They had flamethrowers!

Over and over scenes and moments that harken to Alien as if to say, "See that! Now you know what/where/who that was! Cool huh?" Except that is ISN'T what/where/who! It's a completely different what/where/who!

It doesn't bother me that it is different or similar. I really get the feeling that the entire beginning and middle of the film was written to be the same planet and alien and then at the last minute as they are filming the climactic 3rd act someone said.. "Wait a minute! If we do it THIS way we can have a sequel!" and THAT is what annoys me. Ridley Scott had a chance to go back and set the record straight and remind us all what was so damn cool about Alien and instead we wind up with a film that would more at home next to Alien vs Predator.

C minus. Skip the theater and catch it on Netflix.

This is interesting since you and I tend to be on opposite sides of reviews (not always, but often).

I doubt that I will get to see the film before next weekend, so I plan on trying to avoid spoilers as much as possible until I see the film.

However, I must admit that I have already been disappointed by the ambiguous portrayal of whether this film is a prequel or not....that does really S*** I must say.

Come on Ridley Scott, did you make a prequel or not? Do we get to see the beginning of the Aliens or not?

Don't freaking ***** foot around, take a stand on the story you are trying to tell.

The only good reviews I've read about this movie were ones that look like they've been paid for.

The stages I've gone through regarding this film have been quite strange. When I heard that an Alien prequel and a Bladerunner sequel were on the cards for Ridley Scott, I thought "oh dear, someone wants to earn a packet before they retire", then my brother talked about how excited he was about the prospect of an Alien prequel. As a result it piqued my interest, then I read the reviews. Now I'm right back where I started.

Well like I alluded to, if we take what we learn from this film, we can guess what happened before the events of Alien, but we could kind of figure that out already.

You said that and not more then a couple hours later I read the Entertainment Weekly review and I got the distinct impression that the writer hadn't even seen the film but rather read some press release synopsis or something that was printed BEFORE the script was finalized. Just little things, and they could be legitimate mistakes, but one in particular if a mistake or not if a sign of poor editing. In the article the writer said the scientists call the über beings, "directors". Really? Huh... Pretty sure they were "Engineers" in the film.

I saw the movie last night and I enjoyed it. With that said, I think I can agree with everyone here for the most part on some of the issues brought up, especially the comment about a probable last minute change from the planet being LV-426 to being LV-223. The movie would have made more sense if it had been set on LV-426.

I've actually read that Ridley Scott is looking to do a sequel to Prometheus if he can get it green-lighted. I've also heard that James Cameron wants to get involved in it too. I would assume that it would pick up where we got left off with the destination of the ship. It also wouldn't wouldn't be outside the realm of possibilities for LV-223 to be visited again. Definitely would leave the door open for the Alien series to get rebooted (as much as I hate to say that).

This whole thing is a spoiler, so go watch the movie:

Click to Read Spoiler:
Assuming that the opening scene was Earth and the Engineers opened the door for 'us' to come about then we're stuck wondering why they wanted to erase what they created...unless a different faction was involved in our creation. I say this cause the ship in the first scene is different from the 'horse-shoe' ships we've seen. Also the movie doesn't explain how different cultures from different periods of time have this star map, the Engineers obviously kept in contact with humans. They don't show the leap from the alien ancestor to what we have now, it took quite a mixture of things to create it so I would assume other Engineers came along and scooped it up to tweak it to become a alien Queen.

I thought Lance Henriksen was the original Weyland.

Scott has been asked if the Engineer who sacrifices(?) himself in the beginning was on primordial Earth or another world. He says that it doesn't matter and he doesn't care.
Agree with him there, it doesn't mean much other to set up the idea that they are using their DNA to seed worlds.

As far as questions as to why they created life, kept up on said life, and then supposedly were on their way to destroy it (we only have David's word on that), well.. apparently this was written to be a start of a trilogy. Answers to come?

Another annoying new habit of Hollywood today. Writing films with the intention of sequels.

My theory is that human beings were created but ended up being smaller and much less physically strong than the "engineer" race so they were slated to be destroyed like a failed experiment.

The reason why they wanted to destroy us was hinted at in the most vague way. It's a mystery that's left for the viewer to figure out, but there's really only ONE clue. I can, however, give you a hint by saying Elizabeth has the answer and doesn't realize it.

BTW, I figured it out on my own, but still wasn't sure because my answer left me with more questions, but Ridley Scott has stated in an interview that it is what I expected, and also answered my other questions. I don't recommend seeking out that interview without figuring it out for yourself, because it's ultimately unsatisfying.

I left feeling as though the entire movie was simply put out to set up for the sequel where "What's her face" takes off in the alien ship to go seek out the answer of why they want to destroy us...

And in case you're wondering, "What's her face" was about as much as I cared for remembering anything about this movie...

I said in the other thread many moons ago, "Don't S***, don't S***, don't S***"...

Well, I experienced suckage...

I had such I hopes and expectations and I got this...

"S*** S*** S***"

Spaceballs anyone???

Bull, there was a reference to Arthur C. Clarke in there that made me remember something that went through my head when I saw Prometheus and I'll ask everyone here if they thought the same thing. Has anyone here read Clarke's 2001 series and 3001: The Final Odyssey in particular? If so, did you notice a few obvious story parallels with Prometheus?

Click to Read Spoiler:
Mainly the "damning" of the human race by their "creators" which was followed by a sentence of execution.
