Heard about this. While I'm thrilled that Scott is returning to the franchise, his Alien was by far the superior of any of the films IMHO, I worry about the idea of a prequel. It seemed apparent that no one had ever seen or heard of the alien life forms in either Alien or Aliens, so having them show up before the events of the first film makes me think it is going to be a bit of a downer in the end. Does everyone die?

Still...some sort of origin story would be cool. (Still think it would have been cool if they had been discovered to be engineered by the Predators to be a constantly changing quarry for their hunts.)

Weren't the last two AvP (I guess you can throw in Predator) movies prequels in a way since it took place before Aliens?

I haven't seen them so I am unsure of the time frames. I can only guess Scott will keep as far away from those films as well as the last 2 actual Alien films.

I suppose you could do a prequel based on the alien piquing the company's interest. You can have survivors who have a vested interest in keeping it secret because they intend to harvest the alien for themselves, but still, why bother? The problem with prequels is that you basically know, overall, what has to happen.

Another possibility is that they go for a much earlier prequel based on the species that tries to use the alien, hence the crashed spacecraft and the distress beacon from the first film, but I doubt it. Non-human main characters are unusual.

I dont think the prequel will even involve humans, I think it should be the story of the Alien ship that was crashed on LV-246 that started the entire Alien franchise.

You remember the ship in the original movie with the giant skeleton in it and the cargo hold full of eggs?

That should be the prequel IMHO.

Yes, that would make the most sense (for a prequel). At the end of the prequel, the company would intentionally divert the Nostromo to LV-246 (on the pretense of a response to a distress signal). Of course, only M.O.T.H.E.R. and Ash knew the real mission. The trick is working out how the company learned of the alien to begin with. Did they have a hand in its creation (Was it a 'weaponized' lifeform that they developed from the start?) or did they they discover it via their other operations?

I think we will have humans. That is almost a certainty. There is no way a studio is going to bankroll a film, even a film with Scott at the helm that relies on just alien life forms. Subtitles? Aliens that speak English?

No, there will be a human presence.

I was just thinking to myself how disappointed I will be if the alien turns out to be a government bi-weapon. That would be a huge WTF for me.
(Though I also think that is the most likely outcome)

The only potentially interesting plot I can think of would be not to do with the usual style of "that f*ing company", but rather a load of people trying to escape a situation, perhaps one that does, or is overseeing the rescue/escape/whatever, and has a good bit of character depth that might explain his decision to regard the crew of the Nostromo as expendable. He isn't a bad guy to begin with, but the film shows his descent into that frame of mind.

As irrelevant as I thought AvP was, I breathed a sigh of relief when Bishop didn't a) turn out to be an android and b) wasn't a bad guy.

Mel Gibson's 'Apocalypto' (although featuring Humans) does not have a word of English in it.

No subtitles either.

Yet the story message gets conveyed.

I'm just sayin', alien life form characters only.... it's possible.

Financially viable.. unlikely.

(Not to be disrespectful by any means, but... ever watched an hour of programming on 'Telemundo'?!) :P

It gets it's message across to the viewer, regardless of race, creed, color, sex or stellar orientation.

Believe me, I'd love to see a film that would actually make sense in the whole story arc, and that story being sans humans, but I don't think the studio will agree with me.

Whatever they do I hope they steer clear of humans having anything to do with the origin of the species - it will cheapen it considerably. I thought that Battlestar Galactica did that with the Cylons (machines that rebel - how original!). Anyway, I think humans could be a part of it without weakening it as long as it's handle correctly. Perhaps a human ship encounters the alien ship, finds out what's on board, and is able to radio the Company before the alien ship crashes. That would tie up some loose ends (or loose beginnings as it where).

Timelord: Alien was good, even great, but Aliens was better, everything after that sucked body parts...

I thought Aliens was a great film, but a bit more formulaic. Monsters on the attack, kill them all, escape, the hero survives. Kind of been there done that. Still a GREAT example of it but Alien I think actually created the suspenseful horror in space genre, certainly defined it for a modern generation.

We do agree on the "sucking body parts" regarding the other films.

I'm certain they'll take AvP into the canon, but I hope they'll limit it to Weyland-Yutani being aware of the existence of the xenomorph and searching for them. It could be that they've been chumming the galaxy with expedition teams for the hundred-or-so years since AvPR, and one unlucky crew found a xenomorph-infested planet. I'd like to see ruins of alien civilizations, and eggs galore waiting patiently to spread death across the universe. It could even be a good setup for a more comic book-faithful AvP sequel, which takes place in the future.

What I don't care to see is more Weyland and Yutani lineage and backstory rubbish. It's enough to have a heartless company, and I feel it's more effective to not put a face on it. I don't wanna see some guy named Scott Weyland, who happens to look just like Bishop, falling in love with Bukkake Yutani who gives birth to a baby that grows up to be the girl that Winona Ryder's android is designed after.
