What mysterious entity was really famous in the 60's, 70's and 80's and is seen only by lucky camera tooting tourists?
If you said Sasquatch you'd be right, but I would also except Danny Bonaduce, Barry Williams and Howard Hesseman! All four appear in the Syfy original flick Bigfoot
, which has it's U.S. and Canadian premier Saturday June 30th at 9pm EST on Syfy and SPACE
Thanks to my friends at SPACE I got an early preview of this soon to be classic.
My recommendation first off do not watch this alone! Find a friend who enjoys these types of films as much as you do, for you younger among us find a friend that "is of a certain age" to explain what is so damn funny about the cast and what they are doing together.Photo by Lara Solanki – © 2012 Syfy Media, LLC
Speaking of the cast, we are introduced to everyone pretty quickly. Harley (Bonaduce), a disc jockey in the North Dakota town of Deadwood. He and Mayor Gillis (Hesseman), are planning a 80's flashback concert for their sleepy little town. The fact that they are bulldozing few dozen acres of forest for the stage does not sit well for Harley's old band mate turned local environmentalist Simon (Barry Williams). Simon and his gang of well meaning and very attractive "tree-huggers' try to stop it all and save the forest. This sets up the big battle that will continue to rage throughout the film.
Soon thereafter while attempting to carry out their orders to clear the trees a crew of workers are attacked by the "star" of the film, Bigfoot! To be attacked by this big foot is to be kicked or smacked, or if you are really unlucky, picked up and have your head chomped off! Biggee seems to enjoy the crunch of the skull because he chooses this method of dispatching his victims fairly often and does not seem to have much use for the squishy body as he usually tosses these aside.
After the National Guard is called in it becomes a race between Harley, who wants to kill or capture the creature to turn him into a tourist attraction, Simon who wants to save the beast and find a way for everyone to coexist and the military who just want it gone! You will have to watch to find out who wins!
If you watch and listen carefully you will find some great little callbacks to Williams and Bonaduce's past careers as well as some less subtle ones, Alice Cooper anyone?
It is a fun movie but please don't watch if you are fan of great special effects 'cause you will be a bit disappointed. Bigfoot is done entirely CG and barely passable at that. There were times where I thought it looked more like people were being attacked by a pissed off Donkey Kong. (Admittedly it provided much of the charm of this film for me)
Like I said, watch with a friend (or family! This was surprisingly gore lite movie) and just have fun!
I'll give it 6 has-beens out of ten!
