I read a lot of books and I really like to read books that come in a series. Such as The New Jedi Order series that involved the Yuuzhan Vong and the death of a couple of pretty major characters.
So naturally when I read about an upcoming Star Wars series called The Legacy of the Force that takes place 40 years after the events of ANH. I was intrigued as Luke Skywalker and Company are getting old and they cannot live forever or have adventures forever. So I have been interested to see how they would continue the Star Wars universe once our heroes moved on. Legacy of the Force looks like it might be the first step in moving towards that direction. Plus, I hear that Jacen Solo one of the most powerful Jedi’s besides Luke is going to turn to the Dark Side and become the first Sith in a long time.
So the first book came out May 30, 2006, Hard Cover of course. I don’t like hard covers much (They are too expensive) and I don’t like waiting for the next book in a series so in general I will wait until the hard bound in is paperback and by then most of the series will be out or close enough that I can start reading the first book.
This June the first book finally hit the stores in paperback, I was getting ready to pick it up and start the series as soon as I finished the current series I am reading “Area 51†which in itself is an very cool fictional series (I’ll post about this series later), When I noticed that another Legacy of the Force book was sitting on the shelves…..
Hard Cover!!!!
WTF?? A hard cover in the middle of a series?
So I went digging for more info and here is what I found out:
The series contains a mix of hardcover and paperback releases. The plan was to allow each author to write one hardcover novel and two paperbacks, with the first, middle (fifth), and final (ninth) novels being the hardcover releases, and the other novels being in paperback
This is pretty fracked up in my opinion, there is no reason to release various parts of a series in hard cover expect to force people who are currently reading the series to pay more money. I am really annoyed by this since the final book in the series will not be released until June 3, 2008. That means it wont be in paperback until June or July of 2009. Which conversely means I wont be picking up the first book until the spring of 2009.
I know Lucas the Hutt is getting greedy, but come on, this is just messed up.
Am I of base here? Or do you think I have a legit grievance?
