According to Variety, Frank Darabont has signed on to direct the upcoming big screen adaptation of Stephen King's THE MIST for Dimension Films.

The film will take place in a small town where a thick mist engulfs the area, killing those caught in its darkness. Terrified survivors seek refuge in a supermarket, while a swarm of murderous critters tries to get in.

"It's a project Stephen King and I have been talking about doing for almost 20 years now," Darabont told Variety. "In fact, it almost was my first directing project many years ago, but I went classy and did 'The Shawshank Redemption' instead. It's time to get down and dirty and make a nasty little character-driven gut-punch horror movie."

Thomas Jane is in negotiations to join the cast, production is expected to start this coming Spring.

Back in the day when I read a ton of Stephen King, The Mist was one of my favorite stories. I look forward to this.

It was a long time ago, 1980's or earlier I think.

It was a short story in a compilation of stories, I dont think it was ever printed as its own book.

Just ironic. I never read alot of King, certainly not in the 80's and I actually had a story idea called "The Mist" that took place in an small quiet town, had an old church, mysterious dead bodies, etc. Mine was a Vampire type idea though.

Pretty sure I read this story in one collection or another, can't recall what it was but the story sounds familar to me. I have always been a fan of King but with a couple of exceptions (Shawshank Redemption and The Shining) they never seem to get his work quite right when bringing it to the screen. Thinking back, I do seem to remember having the bejeezus scared out of me by Salems Lot, but I was just a little kid at the time....

As it turns out, 'The Mist' was originally published in King's second collection of short stories 'Skeleton Crew'.

Thats where I read that story, I couldn't remember the name of the book.

Good job Crow 8)

If I remember right, The Mist was the first story in that book.
