Let the Experiment Begin!

Experiment #104 ~ WOMEN OF THE PREHISTORIC PLANET (1966)

Original Air Date: Approx: 12/89

Genre: SciFi/Action/Adventure/Romance

Studio: Standard Club of California (Released by REALART Pictures)

Starring: Wendell Corey, Keith Larsen, John Agar, Paul Gilbert

Directed By: Arthur C. Pierce

Theatrical Running Time: 87 Minutes

Tagline: "It's the Battle of the Sexes as Savage Planet Women Attack Female Space Invaders!"

Film Synopsis: A small fleet of spaceships (manned by humans) is returning home after a 6 year mission. It's cargo is the surviving members of a dying world known as Centaurian. The hope is that these few remaining Centaurians can be assimilated into their new predominately human society. After a rebellion on spaceship 'Cosmos 3', the ship crash-lands on a planet in the newly discovered Solarius system. The other ships in the fleet change course and head for this planet to rescue any possible survivors of the crash. Travelling for 3 months (at nearly light speed), the Command ship arrives at the planet 18 years after the crash (in Solarian relative time) to encounter the descendant(s) of Cosmos 3. The newly discovered planet is eventually given the designation... Planet Earth!. Ultimately confusing and non-sensical fare.

Intro: Joel has redecorated the bridge of the SOL! It now looks like the set of a talk show, with a coffee table and a couch for the host and his guests. Crow made a pan of brownies, but he ran out of milk and substituted Tang!

Invention Exchange: Dr. Forrester and Dr. Erhardt present their latest enterprise "Clay and Lar's Flesh Barn", a new chain of fast food restaurants.

(Music):
"If you're tired of the same old fare,
you've got a friend in Clay and Lar."
"All our meat is guaranteed rare...
...Because we don't cook it."

"If you're tired of cookin' at home,
try our meat right off the bone."
"If you listen, you can hear it moan...
...Because we don't cook it."

"Now there's no need for you to drive thru,
our fresh meat will walk out to you."
"You'll say Hi!"
"He'll say Moo!"
"It's Clay and Lar's Flesh Barn!"

Joel's invention is a roll of toilet paper dispensed through the neck of a 2 Liter bottle.

Host Segments:

Host 1: Tom Servo begins to host "Joel Robinson... This Is Your Life", when suddenly Crow frantically races onto the set to announce the appearance of a strange satellite on a collision course with the SOL. Joel does what anyone would do... brings it inside the ship! It turns out to be a "Doomsday Device", Joel has accidentally activated it's self-destruct mechanism, and the device announces "You have One hour and thirty-seven minutes to disarm and yes, you are up a creek!"

Host 2: The object turns out to be the "Issac Asimov Literary Doomsday Device". Crow finds an owner's manual, but it's over 1000 pages long and very technical and confusing.

Host 3: Joel attempts to disarm the device but it explodes, turning him and the Bots into duplicate Issac Asimovs.

End: Joel reads some fan letters. Larry "files this".

Items of Note:
~ This was actually the last Season One episode taped by the gang at BBI.
~ There is a panel on the coffee table which holds what will be the eventually familiar green, red and yellow buttons, signifying "Movie Sign", "The Mads are Calling", etc...
~ This is the first use of an opening sequence before the first commercial break, and then coming back for the invention exchange.
~ Mike Nelson (in his first speaking role of the series) is the voice of the Doomsday Device.
~ The first reference to a frequently used riff in future episodes. In the film, Lt. Bradley tells a long-winded story about his martial arts training, and offers up the now classic term 'Hi-keeba'!

Personal Notes:
~ Fans have long suspected that this episode was actually shot late in the Season One production schedule.
~ One giveaway is a reference to a contest that will not be announced until Experiment #110 ~ Robot Holocaust.
~ Also, one of the fan letters refers to Experiment #105 ~ The Corpse Vanishes and Experiment #109 ~ Project Moonbase, both of which had not been chronologically broadcast yet.
~ Probably the most misleading film title of the series so far. Yes there's a prehistoric planet, but only one woman on it, and she gets left behind by the failed rescue mission.

The 'Riffs':
~ (Admr. King): "Solarius is a new star, surrounded by numerous planets and a great deal of cosmic gas." (Tom Servo): "It must be from the cosmic chili!"
~ (Lt. Anderson): "Here. This will ease the pain." (Joel): "It's PEZ! It'll make you feel better!"
~ (Joel): "Their technology must be light years ahead of ours! Their use of stock footage is amazing!"
~ (Crow): "Maneuvering room? Don't you mean... the BATHROOM?!"
~ (Linda): "My name is Linda." (Crow): "My name is Lucky!"
~ (Joel, referring to a pet monkey): "I'm gonna go spank myself!"
A good, leisurley consistent episode. Trying to follow the movie's multiple threads almost overshadows the experiment.

Rating: 2 "Surprisingly revealed inter-racial offspring" out of 5
