In the interview by the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, Funes said that such a notion "doesn't contradict our faith" because aliens would still be God's creatures. Ruling out the existence of aliens would be like "putting limits" on God's creative freedom, he said.

And the big one:

The Bible "is not a science book," Funes said, adding that he believes the Big Bang theory is the most "reasonable" explanation for the creation of the universe. The theory says the universe began billions of years ago in the explosion of a single, super-dense point that contained all matter.

But he said he continues to believe that "God is the creator of the universe and that we are not the result of chance."

I find this to be very interesting, its another milestone where Religion eventually is forced to acknowledge Science. (World is round, Earth orbits the Sun, etc).

Mighty magnanimous of them, considering that these are the same folks (different generation) who excommunicated Galileo for his heresy of planetary theory. (Apologies, to any devout Catholics in the audience.)

I'm wondering how this is going to effect the goofy creationist museum over this way that has dinosaurs and humans living together, etc.

The folks over at the creation museum wont pay much mind to anything coming out of Rome. Ever since that Martin Luther guy had to go and pick up a hammer.....

But more to the point tho, I think somebody sometime eventually is going to have an "revelation" and figure out how to make true science and true religion play nice together. We can't see how they fit from where we stand now but then 600 years ago everybody thought the "divine rule of Kings" was just how things were suppose to be.

Maybe this is their endorsement/bailout of Scientology, you know, like how they covered for all the rapists and child molesters.
