On Thursday, NASA held a press conference to announce that the recent TEGA experiment on board Phoenix had confirmed the presence of water in the Martian soil. Whist exciting, Phoenix scientists were expecting that result. However, behind the scenes, something else was being discussed and it had little to do with melting water…

Apparently, an undisclosed Phoenix scientist has been in communication with Aviation Week concerning a “compelling” discovery on the Red Planet. What could this news be? Obviously it’s something important as NASA and the University of Arizona are going to great lengths to keep the details out of the public domain. Plus, Phoenix scientists have presented their preliminary findings to the Bush Administration’s Presidential Science Advisor. The report suggests that there has been an even more significant discovery from the robotic explorer, not only from the Thermal and Evolved Gas Analyzer (or “TEGA,” the instrument used to bake Martian samples) which confirmed the presence of water, but from the Microscopy, Electrochemistry, and Conductivity Analyzer (MECA) instrument. MECA has apparently found even more evidence for the “potential for life” on Mars. But this “evidence” will be the biggest discovery yet.

However, the Phoenix team need more time to analyse the complex data they’ve received and will wait till mid-August at the earliest to make a press release. Scientists are keen to point out that they have not discovered direct evidence for life on Mars (after all, Phoenix is not equipped to do this), but the indication is this new data will be even more profound than the discovery of water.

As if that wasn’t enough, it looks like they’ve had to take this news to the top. Advising the White House is a pretty big deal, so we’ll just have to wait and see what Phoenix has uncovered…

OK, well, I'm curious to say the least.
Did a martian come up and tap Phoenix on the "shoulder" and ask just what the h-e-double toothpicks it was doing diggin' on his land? If not "life" then what?

Mars is an egg? They cracked it?

Will we ever know for sure??? (As the conspiracist would say.)

So, according to info just beginning to leak out, what NASA discovered on Mars that required a Saturday morning meeting with the White House was:
Click to Read Spoiler:
Perchlorate Salts.

Uhm, yeah. I had to look up what they were too. And they interrupted the President's Saturday morning cartoon watching for that....!

If that is true then that is certainly not very exciting....unless I am missing something about what Perchlorate Salts is and how it relates to anything on Mars.

Some damned fool probably thinks we can somehow harvest it for our defense/manufacturing needs.

Very much NOT news worthy. (Or is this just what they are telling us? 8-[ )

From what I understand, it depends on what kind of perchlorate salts they found. There are ten different kinds. If they found sodium perchlorate then it's fertilizer and that's pretty exciting for the possibility for Martian life. If they any of several other kinds then it's solid rocket fuel (well, half of it anyway) and that would might mean future Mars explorers could take less with them from earth and "mine" fuel for the return trip when they got there. If it's lithium perchlorate, most strange of all, it would mean astronauts could "burn" the Martian rocks to get oxygen for life support.

looking at the wiki the perchlorate salt thing is already posted. Maybe there is something else that they have found.

Much ado about nothing

There are, of course, two possibilities here....

1) They found something so extraordinary that when they informed the President and an order came down to conceal it. (Tin foil hat crowd?)

2) They link above is the actual truth.

What do you think?

Guess I'll take a third side (aren't there three sides to every story?) and say, it's too early to tell. I'm a little peeved with the press for always rushing to get the story. We're talking researchers here. They need time to analyze their data and confirm with follow-on tests. What's the rush?

From what I've seen elsewhere, the guesses are leaning towards not, but let just say that they found "microbes", I still say that they don't count as "life".

Life on Mars? Show me a multi-celled higher-order mammal-like creature with cognitive thinking and opposable digits, tool usage and spoken language...

Of course then I'll $%^& my pants...

Microbes? Hell I would EXPECT them to find microbes!!!
