So, what do you guys think Blue-ray is doomed already?

Hardly surprising. Technology is moving faster today than ever. I foresee a day that the very idea of a disc and laser will seem archaic. Flash type memory is becoming better and faster. Internet/wireless networks may indeed destroy the brick & mortar video store at some point. It may not be the "internet" per say but a wireless network much like what the cell phones, PDA's and Kindle-type electronics use.
There is a point when one has to wonder exactly what will be the point of increasing the detail of a home movie. I'd say in another 10 years the majority of homes may have the HD TV's. As it is I think the ole tube tele's reign and the added detail of Blu-ray or any advances are just lost.

I don't think the brick and mortar stores are going away any time soon. There are just too many people out in the "sticks" that don't have access to high-speed internet, whether through cable, DSL, wi-fi, or FOIP.

DSL has a limit to range, but the biggest limit is the old copper wire that is still heavily saturated in many areas. Cable is if you are lucky out in the sticks to be on a road where the trunk flows. Wi-Fi you have to be in range of it, and that is about 3-4 miles currently (little high). And FOIP is barely hitting major cities now. Satellite I don't really cover because of the high cost and only one of 2 providers offering it.

Why do I start with high-speed internet, well it does connect slightly to Blu-ray (go with me here). These same people out in the sticks are happy with what they got, and for the most part not everyone can go out and get the latest and greatest. They just don't have the money right now to do so. Not to mention the prospect of replacing your movie library with Blu-Ray, like video to DVD (yes, blu-ray players will play dvd's).

As it is most people are still confused about the change over to digital tv. Around me there are only 3 stations that have switched. NBC and CBS still haven't started broadcasting in Digital.

While yea, I don't really discount the odds of Blu-Ray being replaced in x years, something is going to have to become as easy as DVD in order to replace it for the masses, not something that looks exactly the same but just sounds different.

I agree with Koskun, the reports of "pressed" media's death are premature. This country is still only adequately served by high-bandwidth internet providers in major metro areas. So, until there is a big pipe to all subscribers, Blu-Ray (and possibly still DVD) will be needed to provide a significant portion of the content.

Oh, I agree. I wasn't trying to say "Disc's will die on this date". I just foresee a time. May be in the distant, say 20-30 years but I think it could happen.
As far as closer to know, I think the manufactures might try to put out a new and greater technology, but whether the public and even the studios would accept it after the Blu-Ray vs. HDDVD war of the last couple of years, and that after the VHS vs. DVD war that was fought even earlier.
