I still predict Windows 7 will be delayed till early next year. They always delay them.

I dunno....they're looking pretty confident with their pricing releases and the RC version is looking pretty good too. I've only had a few problems with it.

Since they are already selling pre-orders, I would doubt that it gets delayed at this point.

Not to mention that all the feedback on the RC candidate is all positive.

Ive had just a few blue screens. Prime95 gives me an instant BSOD but its been generally stable.

I had a great glitch in my sound drivers last night where everything sounded like it was being sped up then slowed down then back up again constantly

It'll definitely ship before/in time for Christmas, though I reckon it'll ship when MS says it will.

I think I'll likely pre-order in a month or so. Any one else going to?

Depends on whether they intend to utterly disable my RC on the very millisecond the OS launches.

Also, did anybody try the Vista RC and then upgrade to the proper version? What process is involved?

Basically I mean, will I be able to upgrade or will I have to reinstall everything?

_IF_ I remember correctly, and I just awoke, so I'm not going searching this early... the RC is good until July 2010, or some such.

I am seeing some reports that Windows 7 has gone gold and it being sent out for reproduction.

Seems like they could release it early if they wanted.

If this version is indeed Released to Manufacturers then, yeah, it's almost certainly the version that will ship retail.
The OEMs will start building their disk images around it and would likely get a little testy if Microsoft goes "but wait...."

An RC2 isn't unheard of (didn't Vista have one), but I think if it goes out the door to the OEMs then "it's done."

(For any definition of "done" that applies to a Microsoft xx.0 release)

I am not 100% sure, but I would bet that the gold edition has a number of last minute minor tweaks.

I have 2 copies pre-ordered myself.

So will most people be getting the Ultimate edition? Its expensive but having not tried the Home Premium I wouldnt know what they are going to cut out of it.
If Vista is anything to go by then the Home basic is really just a complete waste of time.

AFAIK, Home Basic and HP editions differ by one 'important' point of the translucent glass effect. Sure, there are other differences, but what of those matter to you?

One thing I'm actually curious about is whether any edition of Vista/7 supports software RAID1 for definite. I haven't been able to find the answer to that online yet.

While there are more than 3 editions, you will only see Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate.

As with Vista, Ultimate is not worth it. Home premium is the way to go.

Here is a comparison chart:
