WASHINGTON – Astronomers say they have for the first time spotted a planet beyond our own in what is sometimes called the Goldilocks zone for life: Not too hot, not too cold. Juuuust right.

Not too far from its star, not too close. So it could contain liquid water. The planet itself is neither too big nor too small for the proper surface, gravity and atmosphere.

It's just right. Just like Earth.

"This really is the first Goldilocks planet," said co-discoverer R. Paul Butler of the Carnegie Institution of Washington.

The new planet sits smack in the middle of what astronomers refer to as the habitable zone, unlike any of the nearly 500 other planets astronomers have found outside our solar system. And it is in our galactic neighborhood, suggesting that plenty of Earth-like planets circle other stars.

Finding a planet that could potentially support life is a major step toward answering the timeless question: Are we alone?

Let me put on my amateur astrophysicist hat for a moment, but I doubt this planet qualifies as anything close to an Earth II.

It's three time more massive than Earth so unless you enjoy feeling like you're carrying 2 of your friends on your back this isn't a place any Earth native would enjoy. It's also only a little larger than Earth yet still 3 times heavier so this place must be made out of some heavy stuff.

Also, being tidally locked with its sun, any atmosphere it had would likely be violently turbulent as the massive temperature differences constantly try to normalize.

Still it is more "Earth-like" than anything found around another star yet... but still not even as Earth-like as Venus or Mars are closer to home.

Or you could think of any planet that is substantially denser than our own as being mineral rich providing for an ideal mining colony such that we can provide a catalyst for a self-fulfilling basis for "Outland"...
