It probably didn't help that I am still a bit under the weather (though not to the point that I shouldn't be going anywhere/doing anything), but I found the film lacking. It wasn't exciting in places, little atmosphere built up, just really flat. My wife (serious HP fan) noted the complete lack of dialogue which I think probably has something to do with it.

I think the idea of it being split into two films was either forced on the people doing the work or it was an after-thought. I think it had to gallop all the way to the logical split point, then it'll gallop some more in the second film until the Hogwarts part of the story begins.

The screenplay suffered from needing to read the book in order to give the story substance. There was also a continuity flaw in that the three don't know why they were attacked in the cafe (because they said Voldemort's name), then later Harry says "you know who" to Hermione, as if they know at that point, and due to a bit later on, it seems as if the audience should know already.

Having said that, I think book 7 was pretty badly written, that should have been two books really with a lot more room to breathe.

The thing that really got me about the film was that I was actually waiting for the film to finish for the last 15 minutes. The other films at least held my attention, and most of them I would have a good thing or two to say about each at least (and I enjoy watching them again despite their flaws). Perhaps this one was down to me feeling under the weather though, but it wasn't as if I felt like $%^& during the movie.

I'll probably watch it again before the second film comes out, to see how I feel about it then.

On the other hand, I'm watching Heat today (again). Michael Mann is a director who knows how to direct action.

:? Well, I have to say that I hope I can disagree with you. I haven't seen the movie yet, however i have been really looking forward to it for some time. I plan to see it in a few days...

I hope for a lot of Potter fans that it is a fun to watch film. I think a lot of fans would be VERY disappointed in the whole thing if it ends on a sour note.

BTW, Welcome!

As I said, I've enjoyed the HP films except the seventh. One thing not to take into account is the IMDB rating - you may remember when HP4 had a rating of 9.something, now it is below HP3's rating. I think that's largely due to the "new effect" and initial hype, then people calm down after a while.

My guess is that HP 7 part 2 will make up for part 1 to a certain extent - I think they'll race through the plot until they get to Hogwarts, then the whole thing will slow down, probably be reasonably faithful to the book (though judging by stills on the IMDB website, the final battle is fought alone, whereas in the book they have an audience), and have epic battles and the rest.

We saw the movie on sat. afternoon. Both Ruby and I loved it. I loved that it started with Hermine wiping out her parents memory to move them, so Voldemort couldn't get them.
The acting was great. All 3 main actors have really become great actors.
They did a great job explaining the Deathly Hallows. It will make it alot less confusing in part 2.

I saw this with the wife on Saturday and it was pretty good, but WAY too long. I haven't read the books at all, but I've been able to keep up with it so far. The problem is that they packed in so much content (yes, I know they dropped a lot of stuff from the book) and it ended up being information overload. I would've liked the film a lot more if it had ended about 30 minutes earlier. Instead, it felt like it had more endings than Return of the King and we've still got another movie to go!

One thing that was evident was when that one character died early on. My wife was sad, but I couldn't care less because the character was never shown to be all that important and the relationship with Harry was really never developed in the movies. I was far more moved by the death at the end of the film because I cared more about the character's journey.

It's not a bad movie, but it's not the best. I still think Azkaban is my favorite.

I saw the movie and thought it was just okay. There was nothing spectacular about it. There were a few times I thought, "Okay, they're going to end part one here" and they didn't. One thing I really enjoyed about it was where I saw it. I saw it in the Eagles Theatre in Wabash, IN. The Eagles is a typical small-town, playhouse-conversion movie theater. The Honeywell Foundation (founded by Mark C. Honeywell, co-founder of Honeywell Corporation) spent ten months renovating it. They put in new seats, new screen, new sound system, and many more improvements. The sound was AMAZING! Hearing different sounds coming from the different speakers in an acoustically-perfect theater was great!

Really, like Anthony Hopkins, Ian McKellen, Jodie Foster, Alec Guinness, that sort of great?

I would need to read all the HP books again to cite examples for what I'm about to say, but I think the makers of the films have consistently avoided scenes (where possible) for the HP actors where a bit of clever/decent acting is required.

Click to Read Spoiler:
There's a bit in HP 7 that might end up in part 2 where Harry asks his parents what dying feels like. If it ends up in the movie, I would be interested to see how well it is done.

I caught this film at the weekend and quite enjoyed it if it was a little slow... Much like the first half of the book the tone is quite dark and depressive, the pace is quite slow and at times I felt that the story didn't really flow. On the plus side, it's nice to see the actors performances mature and improve with each film. The opening scene of the film with Hermione was done very well and helped press home the importance of what she was doing, which I feel was not really emphasized in the book.

I guess I sat through the film accepting the slow pace and occasional periods of boredom (perhaps too strong a word) because I know what part 2 is going to be. Part 1 was always going to be a tee up to the finale, the calm before the storm. I doubt it will be one that I will rewatch, but equally I recognise that it is very much a vital part of the story and could not be missed.

Jodie Foster? :P She ain't bad, but she's not even in the same ballpark as the others. Now if you'd said Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep or perhaps, at a pinch, Sigourney Weaver....

Well, now I'm asked to back up my opinion on Jodie Foster :), she was amazing in Silence of the Lambs. I've never seen her in a film where she just seemed to just do her standard thing and coast through it (like so many do). Admittedly she tends to do 'Jodie Foster' type roles, but those roles tend to require a wide range of emotions.

Helen Mirren... I've seen her in a number of programmes / films, but I rarely see her do anything other than a standard Helen Mirren template, which usually doesn't ask for much. I've seen a couple of clips of her in 'The Queen' which looked considerably different, so kudos for that. In the film '2010' I felt she did some interesting acting, in terms of a Russian character trying to interpret something not in her native language.

Meryl Streep - I think I've only seen her in two films, so I can't say much about her. I think both were comedies as well :)

Sigourney Weaver - kind of like Helen Mirren. She's a competent actress, but she goes for roles that are in the same mould as the rest of her stuff.

I would probably peg Judi Dench above Helen Mirren and Sigourney Weaver. Admittedly I'm having difficulty coming up with an actress that I would put in the same ballpark as the male actors I mentioned. Perhaps female actors get typecast much more often?
