Not sure if this is a re-make or a prequel because of the female Kurt Russell. I was trying to see if they have 80's equipment to match the other movie.

It is definitely a prequel. It tells the story of what happened at the Norwegian camp although it seems to be an American base in this movie.

It was always billed as a prequel, but if that is true, then it is amazing how the same events seem to play out here as they do later. I think we have been bamboozled and this is indeed a remake.

I'd have to disagree. In the first movie, it was quite clear that the events that happened to Kurt Russell and the bunch had already happened at the Norwegian post. Why would The Thing do things differently with a different set of humans? I'm a huge fan of John Carpenter's version so I'm looking forward to see what they do with the creature in this version. That's the biggest reason I want to see it.

What I found out:

"Taking place three days before the events of the John Carpenter film,[3] Paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and her two assistants Davida Morris (Davetta Sherwood) and Adam Goodman (Eric Christian Olsen) join a Norwegian scientific team that has stumbled across a crashed extraterrestrial spaceship buried in the ice of Antarctica. They discover a creature that seems to have died in the crash eons ago.

When an experiment frees the alien from its frozen prison, Kate, Adam and Davida join the crew's pilot, Carter (Joel Edgerton), to keep it from killing and imitating them one at a time, using its uncanny ability to mimic any life form it absorbs through digestion, and potentially reaching civilization.

[edit] CastMary Elizabeth Winstead as Dr. Kate Lloyd:[4] In order to not try to compete with Kurt Russell's portrayal of MacReady, the character of Kate Lloyd was designed to have traits in common with the character Ellen Ripley from the Alien film series"

Sounds interesting for a "filling the gaps" movie of a already good movie but my problem with prequels and in this case knowing the end result that everyone is dead.

The Thing from Another World is my all time favorite if I have to choose aliens crashing on Earth movies.

Yes, there is a lack of "What will happen?" with this one. hard to root for a hero knowing that all they do is for not.
