Yep, you read right – less than 2 months old, 60” Panasonic plasma my wife & I got each other as a 25th wedding anniversary gift. Playing around with a toy, which made a loud sound, which in turn startled her, so she hurled it across the room, and cracked the screen. $1k right out the ____ing window.

Nope. I'm absolutely beside myself. I have no idea what to do. Our home-owners deductable is as much as replacing the TV. ](*,)

A gift worth giving is worth giving twice?

Man... You know what you need to do.. Make yourself a "This is my/our room" no kids allowed!
I have a crappy 13" color TV laying around here somewhere your daughter can have.

Mikey... I'd lock that thing up in the attic or something before they get there!

That’s just it though – Financially, we’re struggling. My wife’s parents have been more than generous helping out with our bill payments, and when they discovered we had bought the TV with some of our tax refund $, they were pissed, and have every right to be. Our insurance deductible is about the same as the cost of a new set. I just feel sick in my heart every time I think about it.

No chance of getting it repaired?

Is it still under warranty?

Maybe you can claim that it just cracked for no reason, so logically the glass on the screen must have been under some sort of tortional stress due to a manufacturing defect and thus needs to be repaired under warranty. :^o

Maybe?

I already called Panasonic and told them what happened, I have to be honest about these things. And everything I’ve read suggests the repair is too costly.

Achieve fame on the Internet by starting a donation scheme and encourage everyone who feels your pain to each do a small bit to pay for the cost of replacement? :)

You might want to invest a bit more after that by having some sort of cupboard/enclosure to protect it while it isn't being used :)

I'm dreading it. Last summer (or the one before?) we have another sister-in-law's family over, well, the mum and three kids (the kids aged between 12 and 3 IIRC). In a bungalow designed/sized for people to retire in. There basically wasn't enough room for the kids to be kids, and the garden isn't big enough either, and the two older kids were in that "everything sucks" phase.

This time it's going to be two parents with two kids aged between 2 and 5 I think. The stupid thing is that my parents have a neighbour who just owns the house over the road from them (which is about 5 minutes' walk from us) but uses it as a holiday home, and they would probably let us borrow it for a couple of weeks. I've tried to convince my wife that this is a much better idea but she's not having any of it.

Preparing for two weeks of hell...

My autistic son did this to both an LCD TV and a monitor within about a month of each other. I have since invested in a screen protector for the TV he uses. They are essentially thin sheets of optical grade plexiglass. Various companies make them, they are easy to attach and relatively inexpensive if you can find the right vendor. Keep an eye on Amazon for sales. (A 60" inch one would still cost you a couple hundred bucks, probably. But if you have small children, its probably worth it.) Here's one vendor: http://tv-protector.com/

Sorry to hear about your TV.
